Letter: Criminal minds

By Jim McConnell, Vancouver
Published: May 19, 2020, 6:00am

Why is it OK to let convicted criminals out of prison, so they get undeserved freedom without paying their debts to society? And at the same time, why does the governor think he has unlimited power to keep business women and men locked up so they cannot open their businesses? Business owners and their employees are serving a sentence for committing no crime. This sentence may last for many years after COVID-19 has passed and cost them millions of dollars, their livelihood, and all of their hard work.

I have read about this happening in Communist Russia, Communist China, Nazi Germany and in other totalitarian dictatorships. Please let’s use common sense, keeping appropriate medical practices in place, without destroying the lives of so many people. We can trust Americans to make good choices for themselves and others — except for criminals, and apparently some power-hungry governors.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
