Letter: Rethink college expenses

By Jerry Rogers, Vancouver

There has been a lot of news regarding colleges and universities struggling for funds because of lost revenue since the pandemic. An article titled “State universities and colleges face cuts” (The Columbian, May 26) brings to mind what I have been thinking for years as college tuition continues to outpace the cost of living.

As these institutions of higher education struggle to make decisions on cuts it might be a good time to analyze what education students really need to be successful in their chosen field. I can think of many ways to cut costs that may not only help the schools survive through this pandemic, but if properly done, it may reduce students’ tuition, books and supply costs. However, I do not have adequate information or qualifications to properly analyze my theories.

Therefore, in my opinion, a long overdue thorough study of how colleges and universities operate be made by a very diverse outside, independent committee.
