A driver and his passenger were killed Wednesday on an Oregon coast highway after an oncoming driver veered into their lane and hit their car, troopers say.

Rachael Forrest of Seaside was going north on U.S. 101 near Warrenton when she crossed into the southbound lanes Wednesday morning, the Oregon State Police said, citing an early investigation.

Forrest’s Lincoln Navigator hit a Toyota Rav4 driven by Randall Shine of Ilwaco, Washington.

The crash spun the Toyota into the northbound lane, where it was hit by an Oregon Department of Transportation employee in a Chevrolet pickup truck, troopers said.

Shine, 63, and his passenger, 71-year-old Patricia Shine, both suffered fatal injuries.

The transportation employee, 67-year-old Richard Kearns of Ocean Park, Washington, and his passenger, 59-year-old Virginia Williams of Warrenton, were both taken to the hospital.

Williams also works for the transportation department. Neither of their conditions were released Thursday morning.

Forrest, the driver who allegedly crossed into the oncoming lane, wasn’t hurt. Authorities are investigating alcohol consumption as a possible factor in the crash, according to the state police.
