Letter: Commissioner is hypocritical

By Janice Sanderson, Vancouver

How ironic that Jo Ann Hardesty, Portland City Commissioner, would call for assistance from Ridgefield police regarding her complaint about a Lyft ride that went awry when she would not exit the driver’s car due to her complaints about Lyft’s COVID policies (“Portland City Commissioner Hardesty calls 911 over Lyft ride,” The Columbian, Nov. 11).

Considering she has been an outspoken proponent to defund the Portland Police Department, her actions seem quite hypocritical. She stated to the 911 dispatcher that she wouldn’t exit the car because “it was cold and she was a woman alone.” This situation might be a good learning example for her, if she gets her wishes. Perhaps she will think long and hard about what might happen if an intruder breaks into her Portland home when she is alone on a cold, dark night, and the police don’t come.
