Question: Who hosted a question-and-answer game show for over 30 years, captivating generations of television viewers? Answer: Alex Trebek. I was saddened by the news of his death, and I can’t help but wonder, how will they ever find anyone to replace the beloved host of “Jeopardy?” Of course, it’s impossible. Whoever becomes the next host will not be a replacement but a new face – and voice – for the long-running game show. In fact, the new host will be just the third person to stand behind the podium. “Jeopardy” first aired in 1964 (yes, that long ago!) and Art Fleming was the person who guided the contestants through the half-hour program. The version of “Jeopardy” we all know was produced by Sony Pictures Television starting in 1984 and has been hosted by Alex Trebek ever since.

I don’t know about you, but I learn a lot when watching “Jeopardy.” It feels like a nightly boost to the brain, helping my aging gray cells to keep learning and working. How contestants can store and retrieve myriad bits of information with lightning speed is beyond me. I’m content to watch at home, throwing out answers when I can, and feeling quite happy not to have to stand under the bright television lights with a camera pointed at my face. Playing “Jeopardy” at home is good enough for this brain.

In honor of Alex Trebek I have created a trivia-themed reading list. Brains, like bodies, need exercise, and trivia books are a fun way to pump up the gray matter. All ages can participate in cerebral calisthenics, so I’ve included several titles for kids (here’s a secret: they work well on adult brains, too).

Rest in peace, Mr. Trebek.
