Letter: Restore listening, empathy

Why the rush to judgment directed toward Commissioner Hardesty of Portland? The story itself seems to qualify more as gossip than news. And we weren’t present when the incident took place.

Hardesty’s job within city government is to contribute ideas that could improve that city’s functions. If her vision to rethink police funding means she no longer has the right to police assistance, then I suppose if you refuse to wear a mask or social distance, you will be denied medical care should you become infected with COVID?

Having differing opinions should not be feared or condemned. The founding fathers of this country struggled mightily while establishing the foundations for our democracy. It is a process that turned out pretty well but will require more of the same over the ages. Maybe the real concern is that we need to revisit the concepts of listening and empathy.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
