A hunter was rescued from the Siuslaw National Forest roughly two days after being reported missing, authorities say.

Tyler Saxon of Creswell was dropped off for a hunting trip in the Rock Creek Wilderness on Tuesday morning, according to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office. Saxon was supposed to meet up with someone a few hours later, the agency said, but he didn’t show.

His family reported him missing shortly thereafter, and rescuers searched that night, throughout Wednesday and into Thursday.

Search and rescue volunteers found Saxon, 30, shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday, according to the sheriff’s office. He was in a heavily wooded area near where he had been dropped off.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew airlifted him to awaiting EMTs. He reportedly suffered a broken ankle and hypothermia.

The Rock Creek Wilderness is described as “one of the Siuslaw’s most remote wildernesses with no developed trails or trailheads.”
