More than 3,100 Hazel Dell households and businesses were without power for hours Sunday evening, according to Clark Public Utilities.

The outage started at 4:04 p.m. for 3,162 customers. The cause of the outage was initially unknown, but it was later discovered to be a bad primary underground cable, according to Clark Public Utilities media specialist Dameon Pesanti.

By 6:02 p.m., power to 1,387 customers was restored, and by 6:30 p.m., power to another 1,770 customers was restored. Power for the few remaining customers was restored by 7:15 p.m., Pesanti said via email.

“We had someone close by, so we were able to start working on it quickly. It just took some extra time to identify the cause,” he said.

The Walmart at 9000 N.E. Highway 99 was one of the customers without power, and customers, at one point, were inside the building without lighting.
