VANCOUVER — The pandemic didn’t stop the third annual PeaceHealth AppleTree Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K from happening virtually from Sept. 19-27. A total of 680 athletes from five countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, Sweden and England, and 14 states participated in the event. Typically, the race runs through Fort Vancouver, Officer’s Row, army barracks, Pearson Airport and to the historical Old Apple Tree, which recently died. The event raised nearly $14,000 for the Police Activities League, Friends of the Fort and others. An awards ceremony honoring the marathon winners was held on the Why Racing Events Facebook page on Oct. 1. The next event held by Why Racing Events is the 14th Annual Girlfriends Run Half/10/6K virtual event starting Oct. 11-18, and a virtual Scary Run on Oct. 25 to Nov. 1 in Washougal.
