Letter: Abolish Electoral College

E.B. White wrote “Democracy is the recurrent suspicion that more than half of the people are right more than half of the time.” Regarding the last election, we have had nearly four years to realize how right Mr. White was. The majority of the people did not vote for Donald Trump, yet he is the president. The majority of the people believe that common-sense measures such as social distancing and wearing masks can control the virus. Yet we have an administration that mocks wearing masks and being concerned about large crowds.

The Electoral College allowed the vote of the majority to be overruled by a few. This quirk in our U.S. Constitution takes the vote of the people away from them and places it in the hands of a few leaders in each state. This is totally undemocratic and we have the current administration and its inane antics to demonstrate what happens when the people lose their voice. It is time to do away with this antique and let the people vote directly for president. I urge you to contact your senators and representatives and start a campaign to support a constitutional amendment calling for direct elections and the abolishment of the Electoral College.
