Letter: Trump, defined

By Robert Stevens, Vancouver

I wonder if the president’s favorite song might be Johnny Cash’s “A Boy Named Sue.” My folks were bridge nuts so we learned young, listening to them talk the game. So I understand somewhat The Don’s problem, and in that attempt pulled out our Merriam-Webster Dictionary:

• trump (noun) a card of a designated suit any of whose cards will win over a card that is not of this suit.

• trump (verb) to play a trump when another suit was led.

• trumped-up (adverb) fraudulently concocted: SPURIOUS.

• trumpery (noun) 1: worthless nonsense. 2: trivial articles: JUNK.

It helped me explain to myself why the president can be so compulsive in behavior, so angry at the truth and so appealing to enraptured evangelists.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
