The Clark County Sheriff’s Office says a Castle Rock man is facing an attempted murder allegation after stabbing an acquaintance Thursday near La Center.

Mark Laurila, 51, was arrested by Cowlitz County law enforcement on suspicion of robbery and first-degree attempted murder, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. The victim was identified as 49-year-old Longview resident Lauren Higgins.

Higgins was taken to a hospital for treatment of what were determined to be not life-threatening injuries.

Clark County deputies were dispatched at 4:55 a.m. to a residence near Northwest 41st Avenue and Pekin Ferry Road.

A resident called 911 to report that a man, later identified as Higgins, showed up at their home, “bleeding profusely from stab wounds,” the sheriff’s office said.

Higgins told deputies he’d been stabbed in his vehicle near the 911 caller’s residence by someone he knew, and that person stole his vehicle and left the area.

Cowlitz County law enforcement located Laurila in Higgins’ vehicle around 7:30 a.m. in Kelso, according to the sheriff’s office.

Laurila was booked into the Clark County Jail.

Everyone involved in the incident has been accounted for, authorities said, and Major Crimes Unit detectives are looking into a possible motive.
