PORTLAND — Two men were shot in Southeast Portland Sunday night in separate incidents that took place in the soupy outdoor weather conditions caused by the nearby wildfires.

A man was shot in the hand at about 10:45 p.m. while sitting in his car, Portland police say. The man said that while driving along Southeast Foster Road he witnessed several individuals attempting to break into parked vehicles and exchanged words with them. The individuals piled into multiple cars and followed the man until he stopped at a red light at Southeast 82nd Avenue.

Gunfire erupted from one of the cars that had followed the victim, and the vehicles then sped off. Police ask anyone with information about this shooting to call 503-823-3333 or send an email to crimetips@portlandoregon.gov.

Shortly after midnight, officers responded to another report of a shooting in Southeast Portland, this time in the Brooklyn neighborhood. They located a 40-year-old man in the 3000 block of Southeast 9th Avenue who had gunshot wounds in the head and torso, the Portland Police Bureau says.

The officers on the scene quickly identified a suspect, a 55-year-old man, and arrested him. They recovered a gun as evidence. Police have not yet released the suspect’s name.

The victim of the shooting was taken to a local hospital for treatment, police say. The man’s wounds are serious but don’t appear to be life threatening.

Detectives continue to investigate both shootings.
