A health advisory has been issued for the beach in Seaside because of heightened bacteria levels found in the ocean waters, officials say.

The Oregon Health Authority on Tuesday advised people to avoid direct contact with the water at the north Oregon coast beach until the advisory is lifted. People also should avoid wading in area creeks, pools of water on the beach and discolored water, officials said.,

Visitors should steer clear of water runoff flowing into the Pacific Ocean, as well.

Officials said heightened levels of fecal bacteria can cause illnesses including diarrhea, stomach cramps, skin rashes and upper respiratory infections — especially for children and older adults.

Activities that don’t involve the water, such as playing on the beach, don’t pose a new health risk, officials said.
