Maton second at Stanford Invite
The outdoor track and field season is warming up. Daniel Maton is already up to speed.
The freshman from Camas High finished second in the 800 meters at the Stanford Invitational last weekend. Maton’s time of 1 minute, 51.05 seconds was less than a second behind winner Garrett MacQuiddy of California.
Maton’s time was also close to his indoor best of 1:49.75, which he ran during the 2019-20 season. That time is the 10th best in school history.
At Camas, Maton was a three-time 4A state champion in the 800 and 1,600 meters. He ran the fastest high school 1,600 time in the nation as a senior, setting a state record of 4:06.07.
Oliver in circle for Syracuse
Kaia Oliver, a sophomore from Ridgefield, is half of Syracuse’s one-two pitching punch.
Tuesday, Oliver helped Syracuse sweep Buffalo in a doubleheader. She held the Bison to one run in the nightcap, striking out eight and walking none.
Oliver is 5-4 on the season for the Orange (13-9). She has been sharing pitching duties with Alexa Romero, who ranks sixth among NCAA Division-I seniors with 661 career strikeouts and is among the top pitchers in Syracuse history, ranking top-5 in 12 different career categories.
Oliver’s best outing came Feb. 20, when she held North Carolina to four hits and striking out nine over nine innings in a 3-2 extra-inning win.
As a freshman, Oliver made 11 appearances and four starts in a pandemic-shortened season. She was 3-4 with a 3.44 ERA and two saves.
