Letter: Candidates are extremists

In response to “Three agree: Left is wrong direction” (The Columbian, April 1): Probably most people are familiar with the concept of bell curves and normal distribution. I would guess that when it comes to politics, about 60-70 percent of Americans are on the rounded part of the bell. We appreciate living in America, work at our jobs, try to raise our families well, and try to keep America a kind place.

On the tail end of the curves are far right Republicans such as Heidi St. John, Joe Kent, and Wadi Yakhour. On the other end of the curve are those far-left demons that Heidi, Joe, and Wadi speak about.

These three sound like unhappy people. I am sorry they feel so threatened, and maybe even are a bit paranoid. It would be so refreshing if politicians presented us with a positive approach about making things better, rather than bashing those they disagree with. It would also be refreshing if they didn’t try to press their fear-mongering upon the majority of us.

They are particularly hard on Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, who I hope will run again as a more middle-of-the-curve candidate.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
