Letter: Don’t believe fossil-fuel industry

The local fossil-fuel industry recently sent a paid canvasser to leave a letter full of lies on my doorstep. The letter says NW Natural believes the City of Vancouver must “conduct thorough research on the effects of carbon emissions” before establishing local climate goals. Local weather forecasters are already talking this year’s drought. I remember the world before the firestorms, the thousand-year floods, and the deep freezes in the Deep South. Careful science concluded long ago burning fossil fuels would cause the very events we’re already seeing now. The research is done.

Our addiction to fossil fuel causes grave harm to humans and all living systems. NW Natural is to our clean energy future as oxycontin is to health care.

Our city needs a strong, effective climate plan to end our reliance on fossil fuels by reducing energy waste, converting to heat pumps, and developing distributed clean-energy resources. We need safe, resilient systems for energy, transportation and restoring biodiversity.

For 40 years, the fossil-fuel industry has protected their profits, bankrolling deceptive campaigns to keep us addicted to their dangerous products. They don’t care about you or your children’s future.
