Weather Eye: Get ready for cooler temps, chance of showers

We managed to bounce back into the 90s Wednesday with a high of 94 degrees as of 5 p.m. It was our 15th day of 90 degrees or above for our summer high temperatures. That is our annual average of 90 degrees or better for high temperatures. Are we finished with 90-degree weather? I doubt it. Indications appear we again get hot later next week.

Today will be cooler with more clouds and hazy skies. We drop out of the 90s into the lower 80s. Then, as one low pressure system slides along to the south of us, we face a cold weather system from the Gulf of Alaska that moves inland to British Columbia. The weak front will drag across us Friday with highs in the 70s and scattered showers.

How much rain will fall? Barely enough to settle the dust. Some areas will receive hardly any. The most Clark County can hope for is a tenth of an inch with most areas getting only a few hundredths of an inch. This is only temporary as the weather pattern changes next week. There is a second weather system that moves by to the north over the weekend, but as it looks right now, rainfall stays well to our north. I hope I will be wrong and we get a downpour.

We did manage a few sprinkles that caused a trace of rain to go in the record book Monday afternoon. What a tease. Nice big drops that were spaced about 6 feet apart for heaven’s sake. We have had many daily high temperatures at the 88 or 89 degree reading. Otherwise our string of 90-degree days would be closer to 20 or more. Not complaining.

After the clouds and associated moisture move through the next several days, skies will be clear in the nighttime hours for the viewing of the Perseids meteorites. They peak next week from Aug. 11 to 13. And with no moon to illuminate the skies, it will be ideal.

Enjoy the cooler weather and let’s hope we see at least some rainfall accumulate in the rain gauge. We’ll chat on Sunday. Take care.
