Letter: Ban natural gas in new buildings

If you think the extreme heat we have suffered recently is bad, what will it be like in 30 to 50 years if we continue burning fossil fuels? If Vancouver is serious about reducing its CO2 emissions, then it must join other cities in banning the use of natural gas in all future building projects.

Natural gas is dirty and unhealthy. The infrastructure needed to transport natural gas tends to leak methane, which has 86 times the global warming effect of CO2 for the first 20 years. Cooking with gas can emit nitrogen dioxide (NO2), creating unhealthy indoor air. Research shows there are more cases of asthma in children who live in homes with natural gas.

If we are to keep the Earth’s temperature below an increase of 2 degrees Celsius, we must achieve zero emissions by 2050. Our leaders must take bold action now, or future generations will suffer terrible consequences. Please contact the Vancouver City Council members and urge them to ban natural gas in all future building projects.
