Letter: Be bold to fight climate change

I read the story “Climate Change: Council wants to lead the way” (The Columbian, Aug. 8) that detailed how the city is working on a plan to reduce carbon emissions before 2050. The story seemed to give the city merit for standing apart in its ambition. It said the city plans would be well ahead of other cities.

The city is considering three timelines — “stretch with a target of 2050, bold 2045 or leading edge 2040.”

The story went on to say the council does not want to consider the least aggressive option.

This plan put together with a consultant will not be ready for council passage until June 2022. Eric Holmes, the city manager, said that adopting the 2040 option would require immediate action. Aaron Lande, the policy and program manager, said “leading edge puts us pretty far out there.”

In my view, it is time for our city to be far out there, taking bold steps to do all we can to get our carbon emissions to that level by 2040. The many recent examples of extreme weather in our area and others demands bold leadership at City Hall.

Let’s do it now.
