A 34-year-old man was killed Tuesday afternoon when he was struck by a vehicle near Vancouver Mall, according to the Vancouver Police Department.

Police responded to the crash at 4:09 p.m. near the intersection of Northeast Fourth Plain Boulevard and Vancouver Mall Drive.

Upon arrival, officers learned an 82-year-old man was driving west on Fourth Plain Boulevard, approaching Vancouver Mall Drive, when he lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle drove up onto the sidewalk and back down, hitting a vehicle waiting to turn north on Vancouver Mall Drive, according to a police statement.

The vehicle then crossed Vancouver Mall Drive, up onto a traffic median, and struck the 34-year-old man, police said.

The driver stayed at the scene, police said, and is being assessed by the department’s traffic unit to determine whether impairment was a factor.

Traffic on surface streets in the area, including on the offramp from Interstate 205, backed up due to the crash investigation.

A motorcyclist was killed at the same intersection in August 2019.
