Beverly Kelvie (“Plenty of blame to go around,” Aug. 23) finds it interesting that Douglas Galloway’s letter (“Solution for Cuomo,” Aug. 18) “seems to infer that only Republicans commit hanky-panky.”
But this is not at all what Mr. Galloway meant, at least according to my interpretation. What he said was that sexual impropriety was something that, for Republicans and at least recently, “means nothing.”
Remember when Bill Clinton was running for president and the mantra of the Republican Party was “Character Matters?” I sure do. But now the Republican Party gives Donald Trump (who has admitted not only to cheating on his wives but to committing what amounts to sexual assault) a complete pass. Matt Gaetz? The Republican Party is totally OK with his behavior. Roy Moore? He was enthusiastically backed by the Alabama Republican Party while the national Republican Party remained essentially silent. I could go on.
Remember Al Franken? I sure do. Who forced him out of office over “hanky-panky?” Republicans? Nope. It was his own Democratic Party. John Conyers? Ditto. Anthony Weiner? Ditto. I could go on here as well.
So while it’s clear that both parties have members that engage in “hanky-panky,” it’s equally clear that one party has at least has a semblance of willingness to police its own.
