Letter: Preserve The Cedars as golf course

The county is pursuing the purchase of The Cedars golf course out in the east county area. Clark County District 4 Councilor Gary Medvigy presented the county’s preferred option of purchasing the golf course and creating a conservation area in its place.

It was mentioned by the councilor that it was desired to make this a “win-win” situation. If the county were to purchase, what scenarios exist whereby the golf course is preserved and viable and the surrounding areas can be improved to provide conservation and parklike amenities?

The county has already proved capable of managing golf recreation (Tri-Mountain). Increased vandalism, crime and homeless encampments were acknowledged but not addressed on how they would be mitigated. High school golf programs would be eliminated locally. I would think that a parklike environment and a golf course could coexist on the same footprint.

I would propose that the county look at feasibility of acquisition and subsequent community participation on future usage regarding The Cedars golf course, as a golf course.

My hope is that the county understands that if The Cedars is eliminated there will only be two viable 18-hole courses in the Clark County area. It would be shameful to eliminate this recreation with a population as large as Clark County’s.
