Letter: Reverse marijuana legalization

By Courtney Hoffman, Yacolt

Recreational marijuana use has become a growing trend in our community, especially among underage teens. Since the legalization of recreational marijuana in Washington state, drug abuse and teenage drug use cases have steadily been rising.

In recent years, teenage marijuana use has spiked due to the growingly easy access to the drug. What many don’t realize is how large of a negative impact recreational marijuana use has on the mind and body. This mind-altering drug deteriorates the decision-making part of the brain, making the younger generations susceptible to serious mental and physical issues.

To target this issue, we have to look at the origin: the legalization of recreational marijuana. If we reverse the Initiative 502 implementation, we can reverse the progressing abuse of marijuana. No, we won’t be able to put a complete stop to the use of this drug, but we can bring the rising use of weed among teens to a standstill.
