Letter: Show isn’t over

Please hold your applause until the end of the performance. Jaime Herrera Beutler’s vote to impeach Trump was the right thing to do. But her speech on the House floor had me wondering when she had the sudden epiphany about “truth.” She didn’t seem to mind when Trump told over 25,000 lies over the past four years. Did it really take a deadly riot for her to develop a backbone? Where was her backbone when babies were being torn from their parents’ arms at the border? Posing for a photo-op on the Columbia River to show us how much she cares about fish? Did she ever speak up about Trump’s misconduct? She went along with the rest of the GOP and look at the hell they created.

Herrera Beutler’s vote was not courageous. It was inconsequential to the outcome and it was probably a shrewd political calculation. While it appears that a majority of the Clark County Republican organization is fully on board the Trump train to Crazytown, her vote helped her gain support from even some moderate Democrats, from what I’ve seen and heard. She will need to do more than cast one smart vote to gain my respect. Let’s wait until the show is over, folks.
