Weather Eye: Thoughts of spring as winter drags its feet

Saturday was a typical winter day with gray clouds, a few showers or drizzle and seasonal temperatures.

Vancouver topped out at 50 degrees, a couple degrees below average. Saturday’s forecasted steady rain held off until the overnight hours, and today and Monday will see periods of steady rain and then showers Tuesday.

If we are lucky, Wednesday may be dry, at least the daylight hours. Then more rain Thursday and Friday.

Snow levels will remain low enough so that any precipitation falling will be snow in the mountains. Snow levels will be between 1,000 feet and 3,000 feet all week. Yeah, that is low. We remain with a flow of air from the northwest with cool temperatures.

No sign of snow here at city levels, but cold air will be close. Saturday afternoon, most areas in Central and Eastern Washington were near freezing with plenty of snow on the ground here and there. At least our mountain snow pack is back to normal.

Three years ago, we had some snow on the Feb. 21 that lingered into the next day. The high and low on Feb. 21, 2018, were 36 and 20 degrees. So, it can still get chilly as February wanes. I believe most of us would like to see 60 degrees and sunshine for a few days and have had our full share of winter weather.

There are still patches of snow on the ground, and I saw one photo yesterday taken near Cape Horn on state Highway 14 where a snow drift was at least 12 feet high. Nature is pushing winter’s buttons with daffodil bulbs well sprouted and many that are blooming. Other deciduous trees have leaf buds swollen and ready to burst open.

Many robins are here, maybe they wintered over, but I’m sure they too are thinking spring. Meteorologically, spring arrives on March 1. The calendar says we wait three weeks. So, we wait and see if this last week of winter will behave for us.
