Letter: Texas fails to prepare

My wife’s brother lives in Austin, Texas. We have been talking to him today about the weather there. Seems appropriate due to our storm we just had.

The power company here has and continues to do a fine job combating what nature throws at them. I know that takes foresight most of all.

In Texas they were told 10 years ago to prepare for the worst and here it is. They are not prepared. Millions without power, now frozen water pipes, so no water. No food deliveries, zippo.

I started boiling snow for water here because we had no power, so no well water, for just short of two days. I have emergency water in my garage but the heaping of clean snow on my deck was convenient. Wood heat, propane stove. In Texas, the Republican government has promoted cheapness: cheap houses built in flood plains, cheap power with no backup, either plant or plan. Capitalizing profits, socializing the problems. Now America will bail Texas out, or at least attempt to. A big thanks to Republicans and those who vote for them, must be time for another distraction: war!
