Letter: Heights development has potential

We are looking forward to the demolition of the old Tower Mall building. It will be exciting to see the new Heights development be built with opportunities for affordable housing.

Like most of our neighbors we have followed the progress of the plan, gone to open houses, meetings with planners and the city, and given our input all along the way.

We simply ask the city to limit the building heights to two-story apartments/townhouses on the residential lots in the single-family neighborhoods north of Mill Plain.

Keep density in the core within the natural borders of the Heights, which are Mill Plain, MacArthur and Devine, and provide reasonable parking.

The fire station lot north of Mill Plain is owned by the city. The city is now writing the new HX code, and the city will approve the new HX zoning. This gives the city full control over this property.

We would like to see the city promote affordable homeownership on this lot and work together with Vancouver Housing Authority, Proud Ground and federal grants.

What if the city of Vancouver established Community Land Trusts and built truly affordable homeownership apartments where people build up equity and gain financial stability?

In all fairness, we are all in this together.
