Clark County COVID-19 cases surge over New Year’s weekend

Public Health reports 780 new cases over four days, surge in active cases; no new deaths reported

After a week of lowered activity, Clark County COVID-19 cases surged over the New Year’s weekend, adding 780 new cases over four days, according to Clark County Public Health.

The number of active cases, which tracks the number of potentially contagious people still in their isolation period jumped to 976, up about 50 percent from the 650 active cases reported Dec. 31.

The new cases pushed the county’s total number of COVID-19 cases to 13,692 to date. The four-day increase works out to an average of 195 new cases a day, up from an average of about 83 new cases per day in the last week of December.

The number of deaths was unchanged at 144 to date, according to Public Health data.

Hospitalizations dipped slightly to 60 people hospitalized with COVID-19, down from 67 on Dec. 31, with two people hospitalized awaiting test results, down from five on Dec. 31.
