Letter: President brings us to a nadir

Not Vladimir Putin, nor Xi Jinping, nor Kim Jong Un could have orchestrated what occurred in our nation’s capital on Wednesday. It required our sitting president, Donald John Trump, who called upon his rabble of sycophants to descend on Washington, D.C., to disrupt the lawful, peaceful transfer of power that America’s Constitution requires to accomplish that.

President Trump has acted unlawfully since his inauguration four years ago. But he couldn’t have brought America to this nadir without the support of thousands of office-holders who, at best, looked the other way while he committed one illegal act after another. Trump’s impeachment was not without merit, but his Republican brethren (some of whom might finally be getting the message) voted almost unanimously to defeat the two charges against him.

I hope and expect that order will be restored and a period of calm will result from America’s change of leadership. But I have to remind myself that 70-plus million Americans voted for Trump on Nov. 3; that puts a dent in any optimism I have about our future.
