In watching what is perhaps one of the darkest days in our history, I wondered how we got to this point.
Never in American history have we had a president that incited his followers to commit insurrection as a means of staying in power. Let me be clear, we arrived at this low by the acquiescence and abatement of the entire Republican Party. Trump showed the content of his character from the beginning, yet they looked away.
He said, “I’ll accept the election only if I win.” They did not rebuke him. He said he believed our enemies (Putin) over our own government agencies; they humored him and said he’ll become more presidential. He called Nazis very fine people. They were suddenly deaf. He conspired to commit treason by strong-arming a foreign country (“could you do me a favor though”) to investigate his political opponent, in exchange for U.S. aid. They feigned indignation but indulged his abuse of power. In fact, Republicans shielded him from legitimate investigation and enabled him to further abuse of power.
The list is long and sordid, but remember that Republicans enabled him. They are spineless toadies of a despot. They are what they have become.
