Letter: Uphold county fireworks ban

The Clark County Council is on the verge of repealing the fireworks ban in the unincorporated areas of the county (“Clark County Council considers repealing fireworks ban,” The Columbian, Jan. 12).

A virtual public hearing has been scheduled for 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 2, when comments from citizens will be reviewed by the council. I strongly encourage anyone who opposes the repeal to submit their concerns and thoughts via the Clark County Public Comment website: https://clark.wa.gov/councilors/clark-county-council-meetings.

It’s been very obvious to many people for several years why the ban was justified to begin with as well as why the ban should be retained. In addition to well-documented and numerous noise complaints that negatively impact those who suffer from PTSD or other health problems, the effect that fireworks have on pets, livestock, and other animals, and the potential danger to people, homes, and property by the continued illegal, irresponsible use of anything other than Class C fireworks, clearly justifies the ban. Repealing the ban only serves to promote and amplify the consequences of their irresponsibility.

In my opinion, the council should uphold the fireworks ban.
