Letter: Thanks to Herrera Beutler

I was disappointed but not surprised when I read the local Republican Party response to recent events (“Herrera Beutler’s vote sees backlash,” The Columbian, Jan. 15). Joel Mattila said that her vote directly violates the Clark County Republicans values of standing for truth. They also sent a letter to Trump thanking him and denouncing a “riot culture on the far left …” Really? Yes, really.

This is supposed to be the party of law and order, yet the president’s followers beat police officers with a blue lives matter flag. A police officer died at their hands.

Herrera Beutler voted with Trump 81 percent of the time over the last four years. When her life was threatened by a riotous mob assembled and incited by Trump, she voted her truth. An elected official is supposed to represent their constituents. I believe that Herrera Beutler not only represented her constituents, but she represented the values her party speaks of but does not actually espouse as well. Most of all, she voted for her country. As an American, a patriot and one of her constituents, I want to sincerely thank her for breaking with her hypocritical party and voting for truth. I pray for our country.
