Letter: Maintain fireworks ban

On behalf of thousands of pet owners, combat veterans, seniors, infants (and their parents) and anyone who appreciates peace and quiet, we ask that before the Clark County Council repeals the new “safe and sane” fireworks policy, they simply give this reasonable option a try.

The previous council showed mature, thoughtful leadership when it passed the new policy less than two months ago. A month later, we endured once again the familiar New Year’s blowout (which arrived before the new county ordinance took effect). And once again, our poor pooch was terrorized — and we were infuriated — by the screaming rockets and thunderous detonations that mar New Year’s and the Fourth of July here.

We took some comfort, though, in the fact that the law had been changed, and that soon this explosive, twice-annual frenzy would be calmed down considerably. The council’s consideration of repealing this law removes that sense of relief.

Please, councilors, before resuming the New Year’s and Independence Day craziness, let’s give “safe and sane” a try. Your constituents might end up liking it. Safe and sane, we predict, will be better than risky and nuts.
