The U.S. Courts for the 9th Circuit announced the theme for its annual civics contest Tuesday as “What Does Our American Community Ask of Us?”

The contest offers high school students in the Western states an opportunity to win cash while learning about the role of the federal judiciary.

It’s open to young people who live in the 9th Circuit, including Washington and Oregon, according to a news release. Students from ninth to 12th grade who attend public, private, parochial or charter schools, as well as home-schooled students, are invited to participate.

Previous first-place winners of the essay and video portion of the contest were invited to the annual 9th Circuit Judicial Conference held in July. However, because the conference was canceled for this year due to COVID-19 restrictions, cash awards were increased. A total of $11,400 in cash prizes will be awarded in the circuitwide contest. The top three finishers in both the essay and video competitions will receive $3,000 for first place, $1,700 for second place and $1,000 for third place.

Contest rules and other information are available at https://www.ca9.uscourts.gov/civicscontest/. Entries will be accepted starting Feb. 1. The deadline for entries is 11:59 p.m. on March 17. Finalists will be announced in May and the winners in June.
