Letter: Make the right choices

By Den Mark Wichar, Vancouver

In the USA, July Fourth celebrates our freedom. Other equally free countries have similar days. Freedom. Freedom to do what? It should be more than making noise.

We are free, to choose between selfish and selfless. We are free to choose between a closed mind and an opened mind. We are free to choose between superstition and science. We are free to choose between fiction and fact. We are free to choose between ignorance and knowledge. We are free to choose between exclusion and inclusion. We are free to choose between destruction and construction. We are free to choose between war and peace. We are free to choose between hate and love.

One would think that with thousands of years of influence from Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and such — followed by most of the planet’s nearly eight billion people, and all preaching peace — that there’d be less suffering extant in this turbulent world. Not so. Religion has not worked. Many people have chosen incorrectly.

We are free to choose. Not to make noise, but to make music.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
