The large number of Clark County residents who chose to break the legal, appropriate ban on fireworks was appalling. These people showed no respect for the rule of law and no concern for the loss of life and destruction of this beautiful state caused by fire. Setting fires and explosions doesn’t celebrate our freedoms, it’s simply destructive and demonstrates a complete lack of patriotism, while supporting the economy of China where most fireworks are manufactured. If people wanted to celebrate this country, they would take care of it, not destroy it.
Clark County has been besieged by pleas to ban fireworks for years. Finally, officials made the right move, even setting up a call center for reporting violations. Unfortunately, it was a hopeless exercise in unpreparedness and demonstrated no support for citizens who made use of the new call center.
The use of high-temperature explosive devices in the middle of a severe drought in densely populated areas represents a criminal mindset. The Clark County Council needs to step up and support the fire marshal when dangerous conditions arise. Voters need to demand changes at the council level, in the sheriff’s office, and in the level of funding provided to firefighters. County officials need to answer publicly to citizens who are outraged by what went on Sunday night.
