Vancouver house featured on HGTV’s ‘Container Homes’

A home built from 11 shipping containers at the southern end of 164th Avenue is for sale at $2 million.

The owner, Edward Merced, designed the one-of-a-kind home and built it in 2015 and 2016, attracting the attention of HGTV, which featured the house in its show “Container Homes.”

“You have to really see it to feel it,” said Louise James, the real estate broker who created a website to promote the house: vancouvercontainerhouse.com.

The four-bedroom, 4,074-square-foot home on the 17,424-square-foot property features an outdoor koi pond with an underwater viewing window from an adjacent room.

“For the koi pond: He was told he couldn’t do that,” James said. “He wanted to be able to see the fish from the front room. He just bought it, got up to code and had it done by himself with an aquarium worker.”

The house’s shipping containers were rotated, stacked and built into a wood-frame structure. Three containers are 20 feet long by 8 feet wide, and eight containers are 40 feet by 8 feet.

Jason Stanek, founder and president at Vancouver-based JS Structural, helped developed the structural plan for the house.
