Letter: Indoctrination is insidious

The Columbian
Published: July 18, 2021, 6:00am

James Ault (“Offer a look at classrooms,” Our Readers’ Views, July 14) advocates installing cameras in classrooms, because he’s concerned about teachers “promoting ideological slants, inappropriate sex education and distorted history.”

While critiques can be made of Mr. Ault’s letter (citizens do have access to curricula and educational materials), what stood out to me is that the day Mr. Ault’s letter was published, I learned that white-nationalist-adjacent Tucker Carlson had promoted exactly the same idea on July 6.

Did Mr. Ault get his idea from Tucker Carlson? Is Mr. Ault aware that he’s repeating something he probably heard on Fox “News?” Is Mr. Ault aware of how propaganda functions, especially its appeal to emotions? Is Mr. Ault aware that the “critical race theory” outrage originated from someone at the Manhattan Institute who was paid to foment this moral panic?

Is Mr. Ault aware that he was indoctrinated? Is Mr. Ault truly free if he is viscerally acting as propagandists want him to act: uncritically?
