An Army lieutenant who went missing Sunday while hiking near Mount St. Helens was found dead Wednesday afternoon in the Mount Whittier area.

The Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office said 1st Lt. Brian Yang, 25, had fallen about 200 feet down a steep embankment.

Hikers called 911 around 2 p.m. to report they had found an unresponsive hiker on the ridge below them, the sheriff’s office said. Search and Rescue identified the person as Yang.

Yang, from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, was believed to be training for an upcoming ultra marathon event, according to an earlier press release from the sheriff’s office. His vehicle was found parked at the Coldwater Trailhead on Monday night.
