Letter: River stolen from public viewing

Carol Boyer’s comments about the waterfront development resonated with me (“Waterfront looks like concrete jungle,” Our Readers’ Views, July 24). There is no green space. It’s designed for the monied class to enjoy the expensive amenities. The Grant Street Pier and the river walkway create a lovely public access that pales in comparison to the jungle of high rises that block the southern sun and the river view from drive-by traffic. Something that could have been a world class public-private space has been minimized, turned over to the investor class. Access for the less able-bodied is almost nil, not to mention the annoying parking situation.

I believe the original design, as presented in The Columbian, showed the high rises placed farther north near the railroad berm with building residents looking southward over a large green space toward the river. I feel that the river has been stolen from the public viewing and access. Now they plan to do the same thing on the other side of the I-5 Bridge. Yikes! Whose river is it anyway?
