Prep basketball: Heritage girls remain on track to beat Prairie again

Peneueta, Salavea compete in track in afternoon, lead Timberwolves to win at night

It could be said that the Heritage girls basketball team was right on track to advance Wednesday in the 4A/3A Greater St. Helens League playoffs.

Katie Peneueta scored 19 and Keanna Salavea added 14 points after both players spent Wednesday afternoon in the hot sun at the 4A/3A GSHL track meet, leading the Timberwolves to a 54-52 win over Prairie on Wednesday night.

Peneueta won the javelin, placed second in the shot put and fourth in the discus at the afternoon track meet. Salavea placed third in the shot.

Both players understandably got off to slow starts, as Prairie took a 14-9 lead after one quarter.

Peneueta had eight points in the second quarter as Heritage cut Prairie’s lead to 26-25 by halftime.

In the second half, Salavea scored all 14 of her points to help Heritage secure their third consecutive victory over the Prairie girls after never beating the Falcons in the previous 22 seasons of the school’s history.

Heritage will face top-seeded Camas in the semifinals on Thursday.

Girls basketball

CAMAS 50, BATTLE GROUND 21 — Top-seeded Camas used a balanced scoring attack to eliminate the Tigers from the 4A/3A tournament.

No player on either team scored in double figures, but 12 of Camas’ 14 players scored points.

Reagan Jamison and Riley Sanz each scored eight points to lead the Papermakers offense.

UNION 69, MOUNTAIN VIEW 26 — Ariel Ammentorp had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds as the No. 2-seed Titans eliminated No. 7 Mountain View from the 4A/3A tournament.

Abbey Kaip scored 15 points with three of her team’s 10 3-pointers. Sydney Cowling was also in double figures with 13 points.

Mountain View was led in scoring by Lauren Coop’s seven points.

SKYVIEW 70, KELSO 51 — Maddie Hendricks had 18 points and six rebounds and the Storm defense limited the damage of Kelso’ two top players to advance in the 4A/3A GSHL playoffs.

Skyview will play at Union at 5 p.m. Thursday.

“We used a triangle-and-two on (Natalie) Fraley and their point guard (Lexi Grumbois), and that worked pretty well,” Skyview coach Brett Johnson said. “And we moved the ball around well.”

Jordan Hallett had seven points and seven assists, and Kiki Parks added four steals.

Fraley finished with 18 points and Grumbois added 11 for Kelso.

HOCKINSON 57, RIDGEFIELD 37 — Addie Chappelle scored 15 points and Kylie Ritter added 11 as the Hawks pulled away with a 20-6 third quarter.

Grace Goode had 12 points for Ridgefield.

MARK MORRIS 42, COLUMBIA RIVER 37 — Bella Merzoian hit four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 14 to points to lead the Monarchs. Brooklyn Schlect added 11 points.

WASHOUGAL 49, R.A. LONG 26 — Savea Mansfield had 23 points and 16 rebounds, and Skylar Bea had 14 points and 17 rebounds as the Panthers secured their hold on second place in the 2A GSHL.

KING’S WAY CHRISTIAN 49, TENINO 20 — The Knights reached the 1A district final with its win over visiting Tenino of the Evergreen League.

Abby Cummins scored 21 points and Laurel Quinn had 14 points with four 3-pointers to lead King’s Way.

Boys basketball

SKYVIEW 66, MOUNTAIN VIEW 50 — Mehkai Brooks scored 18 points, and Colton Looney had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds as the No. 2 seed Storm elminated No. 7 Mountain View from the 4A/3A tournament.

Squeeky Johnson added six points five assists for Skyview.

Austin Lee led Mountain View in scoring with 21 points including five 3-pointers, and Zion Cason had 17 points.

EVERGREEN 80, BATTLE GROUND 61 — Jaden Stanley scored 14 of his game-high 30 points as the Plainsmen jumped out a 31-10 lead after one quarter and never looked back.

Evergreen advances to play at top-seeded Union at 7 p.m. Thursday in the semifinals of the 4A/3A GSHL playoffs.

Jaylen Fite added 13 for Evergreen and Peyton Albers scored 12.

Freshman Tait Spencer led the Tigers with 22.

UNION 69, KELSO 45— Kaden Horn scored 19 points and Ariya Briscoe added 15 as the top-seeded Titans advanced the 4A/3A GSHL playoffs.

Chase Johnson led Kelso with 15 points.

CAMAS 77, PRAIRIE 53 — Camas hit five 3-pointers in the first quarter on its way to a 52-20 halftime advantage to advance in the 4A/3A GSHL playoffs.

Armand Nunez led the Papermakers with 21 points, while Carson Frawley added 12.

Hayden Rose had 22 for Prairie in what was Kyle Brooks’ final game as head coach.
