Weather Eye: More of the same for Vancouver: Underperforming storms

Despite increasing clouds Saturday afternoon and evening, we approached the 80-degree mark in most of the local area. Warm, subtropical air was invading the Northwest, and we will feel it with higher-than-normal humidity.

The weather system that moved through on Friday underperformed as expected. Computer models indicated a quarter of an inch to half an inch. The official tally in Vancouver was .08 of an inch. This is consistent with the spring rainstorms the past three months.

We had an impressive storm to our southwest on the satellite pictures Saturday afternoon. Forecast models are calling for about 1.5 inches of rain between today and Tuesday before we warm and dry out. I think this will be our best chance yet for some soaking rains.

The rain was expected to begin Saturday night and continue off and on today. Over the next three days, we have the potential for thundershowers, with local heavy rain and street flooding. We have high humidity as well, so this is not your normal Northwest June weather pattern.

Things begin to dry out Wednesday, and I think we have a brief heatwave Thursday to Saturday, with highs approaching 90 degrees.

On Saturday, Vancouver was three-quarters of an inch behind in the rainfall department so far this month. Good thing I’m not a betting man. I would have lost money on rainstorms that have dried up since March.

Last year at this time I wrote this in my column: “It sure seemed like an early spring day with the on-again, off-again rain showers that fell upon us Saturday. Vancouver has well over 2 inches of rain for the month.” Yep, it was a wet June last year.
