JERUSALEM — Israeli fighter jets have targeted sites belonging to Hamas in the Gaza Strip for the second time in two days.

The Israeli military tweeted on Thursday night that the bombardments of military compounds and a rocket launch site belonging to the strip’s ruling Islamist Hamas were in response to incendiary balloons sent from the coastal enclave into Israeli territory.

“The IDF has increased its readiness for various scenarios & will continue to strike Hamas terror targets in Gaza,” the army said.

Less than two days earlier, also in response to incendiary balloons sent from Gaza, the Israeli military targeted Palestinian organizations in the Strip for the first time since a cease-fire with the Islamist movement halted recent escalations in fighting.

Palestinian militants have repeatedly sent balloons laden with explosives and incendiary devices across the border into Israel to cause damage.

An 11-day conflict between Israel and Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip last month ended with a cease-fire brokered by Egypt that came into effect on May 21.

The conflict saw 13 people killed in Israel, according to Israeli authorities, and 255 deaths in Gaza, according to Palestinian accounts.
