Weather Eye: Enjoy a few days in 80s before prolonged heat wave

Was it hot enough for you Monday? Vancouver as of 5 p.m. topped out at 95 degrees which easily surpassed the old record of 91 degrees in 1938. Vancouver’s weather records go back way over a century so this was quite an accomplishment for June.

Today we see highs drop back into the 80s in the warm category and stay there though Thursday and then another heat wave develops and this one will last for several days. We will see the hottest weather of the year with 100 degrees on at least one day, perhaps two or three. A prolonged heat wave folks.

That is of course several days out but most computer models agree it will be hot. That 95-degree high Monday had an easy start with the early morning low of only 62 degrees. Once the sun was up, the atmosphere heated quickly.

To escape the heat the coast will be foggy with afternoon clearing and highs in the low 60s if you want to make the journey. If we get some offshore winds this weekend with the hot weather even the coast could be sweltering near 90 degrees. We’ll see.

This is crazy weather for the month of June to have such an early start to the hot summer season. I know the first day of summer was Sunday, but it could have gradually warmed up instead of a rapid fire.

Speaking of fires, you may have seen some hazy skies Monday from the wildfire on the northeast section of the Warm Springs Reservation. It’s early for fires and with more hot weather and some lightning predicted east of the mountains, it may get dicey. Do your best to prevent fires.

Follow local regulations on outside fires and campfires. I expect burning bans soon to be issued. Driving over vegetation, the catalytic converter and exhaust could ignite dry grass and such. Outside of higher humidity and cooler temperatures the fire danger will continue to rise. It’s going to be a long summer.

Keep your cool and be safe. We’ll chat on Thursday.
