PORTLAND — One person was killed and another injured in Northeast Portland’s Cully neighborhood Monday night, police said.

Officers were called to the 5200 block of Northeast Alberta on reports of gunfire in the area around 10:20 p.m., officials said in a statement.

Investigators discovered two people suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the victims died at the scene, police said, and the other was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials did not provide details on the condition of the surviving victim.

Homicide detectives were investigating the case, but police did not release any description of a suspect or suspects.

Gun violence in Portland has continued at alarming levels since a spike last year. Police recorded 103 shootings in the city in January, the most recent month for which data was available through the police bureau’s dashboard of shooting incidents, more than double the number from January 2020.

Over the weekend, police responded to numerous shootings, including an incident at a Southeast Portland strip club that left two men dead.

Investigators asked anyone with information about Monday night’s shooting to contact Detective Shaye Samora at Shaye.Samora@portlandoregon.gov /503-823-0768 or Detective Erik Kammerer at Erik.Kammerer@portlandoregon.gov /503-823-0762.
