Letter: Work to save democracy

By Michael Seitzinger, Vancouver

News from the GOP over the last couple of weeks has been anything but encouraging. After voting to impeach Trump, Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, spoke in support of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Taylor Greene indicated support for executing prominent Democrats in 2018 and 2019 before running for Congress. Local Trumpers have announced plans to run against Jaime for not being extreme enough. Conspiracy theorists and truth deniers dominated the Conservative Political Action Conference, proclaiming Trump won the election while advocating for extreme candidates in 2022. Representatives who voted for the impeachment of Trump have been censured by the GOP of their home states and will be “primaried.”

We are witnessing the continuing attack on democracy by those who look to discredit our institutions and install an autocrat. It seems nothing was learned from Trump’s repeated attempts to overthrow the election or the attack on the Capitol.

We can not allow anti-democracy forces and hatemongers to win.
