BAGLEY DOWNS — Bagley Community Park has 24 new trees, thanks to volunteers from Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Washington and the city’s Urban Youth Program.
The group planted the trees, facilitated by Vancouver Parks and Recreation and the city’s Department of Public Works Urban Forestry program, to celebrate Black History Month. Volunteers worked in small groups to plant nine tree species on Feb. 27.
They were joined by Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle, Urban Forestry Commissioner Clif Barnes and Parks and Recreation Advisory Commissioner Matthew Kuntz. Begun in 2006, the annual tree planting honors the legacy of many Black American leaders by encouraging civic engagement and cultivating community pride. After acknowledging the Cowlitz and Chinook tribes, the Boys & Girls Clubs were awarded a plaque for their service.
