RIDGEFIELD — Teachers at Union Ridge Elementary School have worked hard over the last year to keep first-graders engaged while they learn virtually. Teacher Shandel Oderman uses at-home lessons to get students to interact with the things around them. For one lesson, students became “volume detectives,” finding and photographing things in their homes that could change volume from soft to loud. And while most class time is spent on Zoom, students do get to see her from time to time when she hands out learning packets during a weekly drive-thru or for porch deliveries. One learning kit included cotton balls with essential oils to learn about sense of smell. Students have held virtual Zoom pajama parties and a virtual Valentine’s Day party. “It has been great to work as a team,” Oderman said in a news release. “I couldn’t do it without them.”
