Things are going better than I expected with the vaccine rollout, and yet so much worse than they could be. Both England and Canada have adopted a “first doses first” approach, which stretches the time for the booster shot past the time limit used in the clinical trial, when speed was of the essence to get the vaccine approved.
It is common sense that two people with 80 percent immunity (from two first shots) does more to stop the spread of the virus than one person with 95 percent immunity from an initial shot plus the booster. However, recently the fairground site was not providing anybody with first shots because they are prioritizing giving booster shots. This at the same time that a new mandate has come down to prioritize teachers. You cannot prioritize immunizing teachers and reopening schools if you’re using your entire stock of vaccine for booster shots for people who are already 80 percent protected.
We could use someone in the state or county administration willing to stick their neck out for common sense over blindly following the protocol. Clark County Public Health ought to prioritize more first doses, and let people wait a little longer for the booster shot.
